Stressed vowels

a - ah, as in car: aloha

e - a, as in may: nene

i - ee, as in bee: honi

o - oh, as in so: mahalo

u - oo, as in spoon: kapu

Unstressed vowels

a - a, as in about: ali`i

e - eh, as in met: kane

The 5 vowels a,e,i,o and u as well as the 7 consonants h,k,l,m,n,p, and w make up the entire Hawaiian alphabet. In the Hawaiian language a consonant is always followed by a vowel which also means all Hawaiian words end in a vowel.

Names and words are more easily pronounced when they are broken down into single syllable chunks. Take the name of Hawaii鈥檚 state fish, humuhumunukunukuapua鈥檃, and pronounce it hu-mu-hu-mu-nu-ku-nu-ku-a-pu-a-a. Phonetically pronounced who-moo-who-moo-new-coo-new-coo-ah-poo-a... Sometimes the letter W is pronounced the same as V as in the traditional pronunciation of Hawai'i which is phonetically pronounced huh-vi-ee rather than huh-why-ee.

In the Hawaiian language a symbol directly over a vowel called a kahak么 indicates that the vowel sound is to be elongated. A apostrophe like symbol called an `okina indicates a quick pause in the word, as in "ah-ah" for the word a`a. Note: These Hawaiian vocabulary words have not been written with the use of the correct kahak么 markings due to the absence of a Hawaiian Font.

Good Luck!!

I graduated from the University of Hawaii. It's called Aloha Stadium.
Reply:There is the Aloha stadium, which might be what you are looking for, and there is the Kamehameha stadium, which might also be a possibility.
Reply:Aloha Stadium

Aloha Stadium is the largest and most versatile multi-purpose facility of its kind in Hawaii. The 50,000-seat facility officially opened on September 12, 1975 and features a unique air film cushion movement system that makes it possible to move four 7,000-seat sections of the stands into three different configurations: a traditional diamond for baseball (doubling as a wide rectangle for soccer), an oval for football and a triangle for concerts and other stage-type events.

Aloha Stadium is home to the University of Hawaii's Warriors football team and hosts a multitude of other events including NFL Pro Bowl, baseball games, soccer matches, concerts, car shows, fairs and a swap meet - a popular shopping site for residents and tourists.

Our mission is to meet the challenge of providing a first class arena where the dreams of our young people can be realized through participation in sporting and other special events; where the spirit of achievement can be nourished by the thrill of competition; where families can gather to share their cultural diversity with pride and a feeling of Aloha.

Hawaiian Last Names?

What are some Hawaiian last names? I'm creating a character for my story named Kiran. She's out-going, nice, and exotic. Her mother is Japanese and her father is Hawaiian. I've checked Google and such but I can't find Hawaiian surnames.

Hawaiian Last Names?
Here's some Hawaiian surnames: Nihipali (knee-he-pa-lee)

Kahawaii, Kamakeoaina, Nawahine, Pukahi, Kamauoha, Ah-Puck, Kamaauoha, Pouha, Kanekalau, Pula, Alapa,Makaiau

ps - don't let the names intimidate you - they are relatively easy to pronounce. Basically, the vowels are usually pronounced as follows: A is pronounced "Ah"

E is pronounced as a long A as in "hay".

i is pronounced as a long e as in "see".

Ai together is usually the long i sound that you find in the word Hawaii. or in the word eye

The w is sometimes pronounced as a "V"

In Hawaii there is a highway called the LikeLike - no its not pronounced like, like. its pronounced lee-kay-lee-kay.

Hope this helps
Reply:What's wrong with using other names? There are many Hawaiian families that acquired non-Hawaiian surnames due to some mixing way back when or for some other reason. Report Abuse
