Stressed vowels

a - ah, as in car: aloha

e - a, as in may: nene

i - ee, as in bee: honi

o - oh, as in so: mahalo

u - oo, as in spoon: kapu

Unstressed vowels

a - a, as in about: ali`i

e - eh, as in met: kane

The 5 vowels a,e,i,o and u as well as the 7 consonants h,k,l,m,n,p, and w make up the entire Hawaiian alphabet. In the Hawaiian language a consonant is always followed by a vowel which also means all Hawaiian words end in a vowel.

Names and words are more easily pronounced when they are broken down into single syllable chunks. Take the name of Hawaii鈥檚 state fish, humuhumunukunukuapua鈥檃, and pronounce it hu-mu-hu-mu-nu-ku-nu-ku-a-pu-a-a. Phonetically pronounced who-moo-who-moo-new-coo-new-coo-ah-poo-a... Sometimes the letter W is pronounced the same as V as in the traditional pronunciation of Hawai'i which is phonetically pronounced huh-vi-ee rather than huh-why-ee.

In the Hawaiian language a symbol directly over a vowel called a kahak么 indicates that the vowel sound is to be elongated. A apostrophe like symbol called an `okina indicates a quick pause in the word, as in "ah-ah" for the word a`a. Note: These Hawaiian vocabulary words have not been written with the use of the correct kahak么 markings due to the absence of a Hawaiian Font.

Reply:Aloha Stadium

Aloha Stadium is the largest and most versatile multi-purpose facility of its kind in Hawaii. The 50,000-seat facility officially opened on September 12, 1975 and features a unique air film cushion movement system that makes it possible to move four 7,000-seat sections of the stands into three different configurations: a traditional diamond for baseball (doubling as a wide rectangle for soccer), an oval for football and a triangle for concerts and other stage-type events.

Aloha Stadium is home to the University of Hawaii's Warriors football team and hosts a multitude of other events including NFL Pro Bowl, baseball games, soccer matches, concerts, car shows, fairs and a swap meet - a popular shopping site for residents and tourists.

Our mission is to meet the challenge of providing a first class arena where the dreams of our young people can be realized through participation in sporting and other special events; where the spirit of achievement can be nourished by the thrill of competition; where families can gather to share their cultural diversity with pride and a feeling of Aloha.

Hawaiian Last Names?

What are some Hawaiian last names? I'm creating a character for my story named Kiran. She's out-going, nice, and exotic. Her mother is Japanese and her father is Hawaiian. I've checked Google and such but I can't find Hawaiian surnames.

Hawaiian Last Names?
Here's some Hawaiian surnames: Nihipali (knee-he-pa-lee)

Kahawaii, Kamakeoaina, Nawahine, Pukahi, Kamauoha, Ah-Puck, Kamaauoha, Pouha, Kanekalau, Pula, Alapa,Makaiau

ps - don't let the names intimidate you - they are relatively easy to pronounce. Basically, the vowels are usually pronounced as follows: A is pronounced "Ah"

E is pronounced as a long A as in "hay".

i is pronounced as a long e as in "see".

Ai together is usually the long i sound that you find in the word Hawaii. or in the word eye

The w is sometimes pronounced as a "V"

In Hawaii there is a highway called the LikeLike - no its not pronounced like, like. its pronounced lee-kay-lee-kay.

Hope this helps

Kiana pronounced KEE-AH-NAH

For a girl...

Hailei Mahealani?

Luana Kamea?

For a boy...

Maikaio Ali'iloa?

Maikaio Kaimana?

I'm just dropping out some middle names that weren't necessarily put, as well and combinations of the ones you put...

I just had my son and it was hard to come up with a Hawaiian name for him.... LOL! I put in hour and hours of research until I finally came up with a name! Ha!
Reply:If you pick one of the first two names, minor consideration, they will often have to spell out their names for people on the phone. Kalani is common enough, though.

Same reasoning for Hailei and Kamea, I think. People might hear it as Hayley or Kamena. The other names are common enough. Luana and Kiana are sexy names to me, but who knows how they will be viewed in the future. There are people named Marilyn today, but I don't assocate them with Marilyn Monroe as was probably the original intention.
Reply:I am from NZ and maori names are similar to hawaian.

I don't like Kaimana, as it sounds like Kaimoana in maori meaning seafood

I like Makaio as a boys name

for the girls I like Kalena or Kiana, Kiana probably sounds more Hawaiian

Btw I am not a maori but a pakeha (white new zealander)

Reply:i like makaio for a boy thats really nice. and girls i like luana cause it sorta sounds like luna and just makes me think of the ocean at night with the moon n stuff, but i also like kalena. i dont know what kind of middle names though, i can't think of any that are hawaiian or close
Reply:Nahhh... Howz about "Meka-Leka-Hai Meka Heini-Ho"?
Reply:i like them
Reply:Some of these are cute, but I just wanted to let you know that I live in Hawaii and you are pronouncing several of these incorrectly.

Hailei should be spelled Ha'ilei (that's not an apostrophe, it's called an 'okina) and pronounced HAH-EE-LAY

Kalena is pronounced KUH-LIN-AH.

And when you pronounce them, don't drag out the vowels like in a typical American accent. For instance, don't say KUH-LAWN-EE with it all drawled out, it should be KUH-LAH-NEE, short and quick.
Reply:Kalani for the boy, for the girl im not sure
Reply:Kalani Makaio

Kiana Kamea

I also like Kaleo..i know it means Kim in english..but i dont like the name Kim! lol
Reply:Definately, Makaio and Luana. There really pretty names.

Makaio middle: Sun

Luana middle: Moon

Hawaiian last names?

How do you pronounce this Hawaiian surname? "Makaiau"? Is it even an Hawaiian last name and what are some Hawaiian last names?

Hawaiian last names?
Pronounce every vowel. ma ka a-ee au
Reply:bolayag is not hawaiian! 1- hawaiian words never end in a consonant, and there is no b y or g in hawaiian Report Abuse

Reply:Technically the pronunciation depends upon the 'okina and kahako (diachritical marks). A lot of Hawaiian names do not have any diachritical marks, so the easiest way to determine correct pronunciation is to hear a Makaiau family member pronounce the name.

Cuz you can have common names or names that an elder decides for you (these names are like as long as a short sentence). Historically (way back when) a Hawaiian child's name was given to them by the elder. This name usually came to them in a dream.

What does the hawaiian god named ku represent??

the KU represents ancestral memory or the subconsious

What does the hawaiian god named ku represent??
In Hawaiian mythology K奴 is one of the four great gods along with Kanaloa, K膩ne, and Lono. He was the husband of the goddess Hina (Beckwith 1970:12), suggesting a complementary dualism as the word k奴 in the Hawaiian language means "standing up" while one meaning of 'hina' is 'fallen down.'[1]

K奴 is worshipped under many names, including K奴-ka-ili-moku, the "Seizer of Land" (a feather-god, the guardian of Kamehameha). Rituals included human sacrifice, which was not part of the worship of the other gods. K奴, K膩ne, and Lono caused light to shine in upon the world. They are uncreated gods who have existed from eternity (Tregear 1891:540). Kukailimoku is the actual name of the hawaiian war god not KU.

that is what wikipedia came up with.

Meaning of hawaiian names?

I want to know what Keli stands for in Hawaiian?

Meaning of hawaiian names?
it doesn't translate into anything in hawaiian
Reply:Here's one definition:

[M膩maka Kaiao(Hwn to Eng)]

keli

kik Cherry. Eng.

Or it might just be "Kelly" spelled with Hawaiian vowels and consonants.

If you're still not satisfied and want to go deeper, since the "ke" is an article meaning "the", "li" means:

l墨

1. nvi. Chills; to have chills; to tremble with cold; shuddery feeling of horror. Cf. hulil墨. L墨 ka 驶ili, l墨 ka 驶i驶o, to have goose flesh. Pi驶i ka l墨, to get chills.

2. nvt. Lace, as of shoes; to lace or tie. Cf. l墨 k膩liki, l墨 k膩ma驶a. E l墨 mai i ke k膩ma驶a o La驶a-kea, tie La驶a-kea's shoes.

3. nvt. To hang, gird; to furl or reef, as a sail. (PNP lii.)

4. n. Third note in musical scale, mi.
